It’s one thing to have Dentures made and fitted – but the ‘Denture Adventure’ doesn’t end there. Making sure dentures are properly cared for is as important for the health of your mouth as your overall wellbeing (not to mention the longevity of your dentures themselves). Here are a few basic yet valuable tips to keep in mind when caring for your dentures:
- Brushing – Dentures need to be brushed daily, just like natural teeth do! It’s advisable to rinse your dentures prior to brushing as this helps remove any leftover food particles. However when it comes to toothpaste, Dentures require particular attention. Regular toothpaste, especially those with whitening agents can be abrasive so make sure to use Denture specific paste as well as a soft brush.
- Storage – When we think of Dentures, most of us would be able to conjure up the image in our heads of the water-glass on a bedside table – and this is just right! Keeping Dentures moist when they are not in use helps to maintain their proper shape – the shape that has been specifically tailored to the shape of your mouth. A soaking solution or plain water will work just fine but please avoid hot water as this may distort the original shape.
- Just because you no longer have ‘natural teeth’ doesn’t mean you don’t need regular check up, you should look to visit your Clinical Dental Technician in the same way you would have seen your Dentist (Oral health and hygiene is still important!). Your Denture Specialist can test the fit of your dentures and make any needed adjustments as well as offer a professional clean.
Losing teeth is not something many of us want to think about or feel comfortable with but it is a process made a lot easier through the realization of dentures. Dentures help us to maintain our jawline appearance after losing teeth, bearing resemblance to our natural teeth and made to fit the shape of our mouths. With due care and attention, Dentures can help us keep our smile and function as before, hence the importance of Aftercare.
